In Angola, as in many countries around the world, women have historically been under-represented in STEM fields. Social norms, cultural prejudices and systemic barriers have hindered women’s participation and advancement in these essential sectors. However, amid these challenges, a new narrative is emerging – one of resilience, determination and empowerment.
From Luanda to Lubango, initiatives aimed at empowering women in STEM are gaining momentum. Educational institutions, government bodies and grassroots organizations are working tirelessly to provide opportunities, support networks and mentoring programs for aspiring women scientists, engineers and technologists.
One such initiative is the “Girls in STEM” program, which seeks to inspire and mentor girls from disadvantaged communities to pursue careers in science and technology. Through practical workshops, mentoring sessions and exposure to female role models in STEM, the program is awakening a passion for discovery and innovation in the next generation of Angolan women.
